Iroha-zaka Slope

いろは坂

A scenic road with 48 curves connecting Nikko town with Lake Chuzenji and Oku-Nikko. Divided into a one-way, uphill-only "Second Iroha-zaka" and a downhill-only "First Iroha-zaka," this mountain road is known as one of Japan's premier autumn-leaf drive courses.

48 curves named for the "iroha" poem

With 48 curves, the road is named "Iroha-zaka" after the 48-character "iroha" poem. The uphill route (Second Iroha-zaka, 20 curves total) and downhill route (First Iroha-zaka, 28 curves total) are separated, climbing an elevation difference of about 440 meters in one go.

Watch for heavy congestion during the autumn-leaf season

The foliage typically peaks from mid-to-late October, when the entire slope can become congested. From the Akechidaira viewpoint, visitors can take in the autumn leaves covering the mountainside, including the slope itself, drawing many tourists and photographers. An early-morning drive is recommended to avoid traffic.

Travel by public transportation

Since walking is not permitted, travel requires either a Tobu Bus route service or a private car. If you're not confident driving or want to avoid traffic, taking the bus and enjoying the autumn leaves through the window is recommended.

Seasonal Highlights
