Lake Chuzenji
中禅寺湖
A highland lake at 1,269 meters elevation, formed when lava from an eruption of Mount Nantai dammed a valley. With a circumference of about 25 km, its shores are equipped with sightseeing boats and hiking courses, making it a hub for Oku-Nikko sightseeing.
A dammed lake born of Mount Nantai
Said to have formed roughly 20,000 years ago when lava flows from an eruption of Mount Nantai dammed the Daiya River, this lake is one of Japan's largest highland lakes. The shore offers views of Mount Nantai's elegant form, and the lake's surface, which changes expression with the weather, is part of its appeal.
A lake stroll enjoyed by sightseeing boat
Sightseeing boats operate from the shores of Lake Chuzenji, letting visitors leisurely tour the lake while viewing Mount Nantai and the surrounding mountains from the water. Highlights dotting the lakeshore, including Utagahama, Chuzenji Temple (Tachiki Kannon), and Futarasan Shrine Chuguji, also make it well suited to a stroll.
A history as an autumn-leaf destination and summer retreat
During the Meiji era, the lake flourished as a summer retreat for foreign residents, and villas belonging to various national embassies were built on its shores (now open to the public as the Italian Embassy Villa Memorial Park and the British Embassy Villa Memorial Park). The autumn-leaf season is especially popular, drawing many tourists together with a drive along Iroha-zaka.
