Kegon Falls

華厳の滝

With a drop of 97 meters, this is one of "Japan's Three Great Waterfalls," alongside Nachi Falls in Wakayama and Fukuroda Falls in Ibaraki. The powerful sight of water flowing out from Lake Chuzenji and plunging down all at once is spectacular, and a dedicated elevator descends to an observation platform near the base for a close-up view.

A great waterfall flowing from Lake Chuzenji

Fed by the waters of Lake Chuzenji, the falls plunge straight down a cliff face in a breathtaking sight. Ten-odd smaller springs known as "Tamasudare Falls" also flow from the surrounding rock face, letting visitors enjoy multiple streams together with the main falls.

An elevator to near the base of the falls

The Kegon Falls elevator, in operation since 1930, descends all the way to an observation platform near the base of the falls, offering an entirely different, powerful experience than viewing from above. The full view of the falls can also be enjoyed from a free observation deck.

The contrast of autumn leaves and the falls

During the autumn-leaf season, the contrast between the colored rock face and the white spray is spectacular, making this one of the most popular spots in Nikko sightseeing. In winter, when the falls sometimes freeze, an ice-sculpture phenomenon known as "hyobaku" (ice falls) can also be seen.

Seasonal Highlights

🌿 Summer (Jun-Aug)

The spray brings coolness, making this a popular spot to beat the heat.

🍁 Autumn (Sep-Nov)

❄️ Winter (Dec-Feb)

Depending on the temperature, the falls can freeze, sometimes offering a fantastical ice-fall sight.
