Shinkyo Bridge
神橋
A vermilion-lacquered wooden bridge spanning the Daiya River, counted among "Japan's Three Strange Bridges." As a structure belonging to Futarasan Shrine, it is registered as part of the UNESCO World Heritage "Shrines and Temples of Nikko" and serves as the symbolic gateway to Nikko sightseeing.
One of Japan's Three Strange Bridges
Shinkyo is counted, alongside the Kintai Bridge in Yamaguchi and the Saru-hashi Bridge in Yamanashi, as one of "Japan's Three Strange Bridges." Legend holds that when the priest Shodo Shonin came to cross the raging Daiya River, two snakes appeared and formed a bridge for him, giving the bridge its alternate name "Yamasuge no Jabashi" ("Sedge Snake Bridge").
A structure of Futarasan Shrine and part of the World Heritage Site
Although it stands apart from the main shrine grounds, the bridge is treated as a structure belonging to Futarasan Shrine and is included in the UNESCO World Heritage "Shrines and Temples of Nikko." Its vivid vermilion color set against the clear stream of the Daiya River and the surrounding greenery makes it one of Nikko's most photographed spots.
A gateway that has welcomed travelers for generations
Historically, the bridge served as the crossing point for shoguns and imperial envoys visiting Toshogu Shrine, and general travelers were required to use a bridge further downstream. Today it can be crossed for a fee, letting visitors experience firsthand this sacred bridge that has watched over Nikko's history.
