Nikko Toshogu Shrine
日光東照宮
A shrine enshrining Tokugawa Ieyasu, founder of the Edo shogunate, and the core of the UNESCO World Heritage "Shrines and Temples of Nikko." Famous structures include the ornately decorated Yomeimon Gate, the "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil" three wise monkeys, and the sleeping cat carving.
The mausoleum shrine of Tokugawa Ieyasu
Built in 1617 to enshrine Tokugawa Ieyasu, founder of the Edo shogunate, as a deity, the shrine was greatly expanded in 1636 under the third shogun, Iemitsu, taking on much of its present form. As a symbol of the Tokugawa shogunate's authority, it was constructed with the finest craftsmanship of the era.
The dazzling Yomeimon Gate
The Yomeimon Gate, covered in more than 500 sculptures, is so magnificent that people say you could gaze at it all day without tiring, earning it the nickname "Higurashimon" ("Twilight Gate"). Elaborate decoration in gold leaf and vivid colors depicting Chinese sages, animals, and plants is applied throughout, epitomizing the finest of Edo-period architectural and decorative arts.
The three wise monkeys and the sleeping cat
The relief carving of the three monkeys covering their eyes, ears, and mouth on the sacred stable, embodying the proverb "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil," is world famous. Also renowned is the sleeping cat carving above the entrance to the inner sanctuary, said to be by the sculptor Hidari Jingoro, symbolizing peace through a cat sleeping peacefully rather than chasing mice.
