Taiyuin Mausoleum (Rinnoji)
大猷院（輪王寺）
The mausoleum of the third Tokugawa shogun, Iemitsu, standing adjacent to Nikko Futarasan Shrine. Built with the philosophy of "never surpassing Toshogu Shrine," it nonetheless features gorgeous decoration of its own, including the Yashamon Gate.

Iemitsu, who revered his grandfather Ieyasu and greatly expanded Toshogu Shrine, left instructions before his death to "serve Ieyasu even in death," and his mausoleum was built near Toshogu accordingly. Following the principle of never surpassing Toshogu, the buildings are somewhat more subdued, yet still feature exquisite decoration throughout.
The gorgeous Yashamon Gate
The Yashamon Gate, decorated with four yasha (guardian demon) statues, is known for its beautiful decoration using peony motifs and is also called the "Peony Gate." Its coloring uses a slightly different color scheme than Toshogu, characterized by more black and gold, conveying a somewhat more solemn impression.
A quieter, contemplative space than Toshogu
Built deep in a cedar forest, the grounds have fewer visitors than Toshogu, offering an atmosphere better suited to quiet contemplation. Precisely because it's a bit less crowded, visitors can appreciate the detailed carvings and decoration at their own pace.
