Kanmangafuchi Abyss
憾満ヶ淵（化け地蔵）
A gorge spreading along the Daiya River, a striking formation created by erosion of lava from an eruption of Mount Nantai. Along the river stands a row of about 70 jizo statues known as the "Bake Jizo" ("ghost jizo"), famous for the mysterious tradition that the count never matches no matter how many times you count them — a hidden gem a short detour from Nikko Sannai.
The "Bake Jizo," whose count is never the same twice
This group of jizo statues is said to have been donated during the Edo period by disciples of the high priest Tenkai, praying for "the repose of all past spirits and their own enlightenment." It's said the count never matches whether you count on the way there or back, or from one counting to the next, earning it the affectionate name "Bake Jizo." Many of the statues have chipped heads, conveying the long years that have passed.
Gorge scenery carved by Mount Nantai's lava
The place name "Kanman" is said to have been given by the priest Kobo Daishi Kukai, possibly derived from a passage of Sanskrit dharani. The scenery formed by rock faces carved out by the swift current of the Daiya River from lava that flowed out during Mount Nantai's eruption, combined with the sound of the clear stream, offers a stillness far removed from the bustle of Nikko Sannai.

With fewer tourists than around Toshogu, this is a hidden gem for autumn leaves known even among locals. The contrast between the row of jizo statues, blazing autumn foliage, and the clear stream is also popular with photography enthusiasts.
