Miyagawa Morning Market

A morning market held every morning along the east bank of the Miyagawa River running through central Takayama, stretching about 350 meters from Kaji Bridge to Yayoi Bridge, counted among "Japan's Three Great Morning Markets" alongside the morning markets of Wajima in Ishikawa and Katsuura in Chiba. More than 40 stalls belonging to the Hida-Takayama Miyagawa Morning Market Cooperative line up, selling fresh vegetables and fruit grown by local farmers, pickles, miso, and cut flowers, along with rustic handmade folk crafts and souvenirs. Originally held on Yasukawa-dori street, it moved to its current location along the Miyagawa River in 1962 for traffic safety reasons. Adjacent to the Sanmachi old town, it offers visitors a quintessential Hida-Takayama morning experience, with food-tasting and conversation with locals against the murmur of the river, drawing many tourists from Japan and abroad.

Stalls run by local farmers and producers line the riverside walkway along the east bank of the Miyagawa, from Kaji Bridge to Yayoi Bridge. Counted among "Japan's Three Great Morning Markets" together with the Wajima and Katsuura markets, it bustles with both local shoppers seeking Hida produce and processed goods, and tourists enjoying its distinctive Hida-Takayama atmosphere. The Hida-Takayama Miyagawa Morning Market Cooperative has operated it since it relocated from Yasukawa-dori to its current location in 1962.
From seasonal vegetables and pickles to folk crafts
Stalls offer seasonal freshly picked vegetables and fruit, pickles including Hida's specialty red turnip pickles, miso, and cut flowers, as well as handmade folk crafts and small items including saru-bobo dolls. Producers themselves often staff the stalls, adding to the charm of chatting about seasonal ingredients and Hida life while shopping. Food stalls sometimes appear too, and many travelers stop by in place of breakfast.
