Hakone Marsh Botanical Garden
箱根湿生花園
A botanical garden opened at the edge of the Sengokuhara wetlands, said to be Japan's finest treasury of wetland plants. About 1,700 species of wetland and alpine plants from Japan and abroad are cultivated and displayed in as natural a form as possible, divided into a wetland zone and a mountain-herb zone. Walking the boardwalks, visitors can observe delicate flowers up close through the seasons — skunk cabbage and Asian skunk cabbage in spring, Japanese egret flower and Nikko day lily in summer, and gentian and autumn grasses in fall. With over 50 years of history since opening, it's a valuable spot to experience the natural environment of Sengokuhara firsthand.
A treasury of wetland plants
Retaining traces of the original Sengokuhara wetland, the grounds are planted with about 1,700 species of wetland and alpine plants from Japan and abroad. Visitors can observe them up close along boardwalks, making this a valuable facility for learning about the ecology of rare wetland plants.
The changing face of the garden through the seasons
The garden offers different flowers each season: skunk cabbage and Asian skunk cabbage in spring; Japanese egret flower and Nikko day lily from early summer into summer; and gentian and autumn grasses in fall. Visiting together with the adjacent Sengokuhara silver-grass field is also recommended.
Seasonal Highlights

Japanese egret flower and Nikko day lily, among other summer wetland plants, reach their best.

Gentian and autumn grasses color the grounds.

The garden is closed for winter from December through mid-March.
