Lake Ashi

A caldera lake formed by the activity of Mt. Kami and other central cones of the Hakone volcano. With a circumference of about 18 km and an area of about 7 square km, it is Hakone's premier scenic spot, offering views of Mount Fuji from its shores under good conditions. Sightseeing boats known as the "Hakone Sightseeing Cruise" ply the lake, connecting the three ports of Togendai, Hakone-machi, and Moto-Hakone. A caldera lake born of Mt. Kami's eruptions
This caldera lake is said to have formed when debris flows from a phreatic eruption of Mt. Kami, a central cone of the Hakone volcano, dammed the Hayakawa River roughly 3,000 years ago. With a circumference of about 18 km and a maximum depth exceeding 40 meters, it's known as a spot with a stunning view of Mount Fuji across the water on clear days. Legend holds that a dragon god has long inhabited the lake, and the lakeside area, including Hakone Shrine's Kuzuryu Shrine, has long been an object of worship.
A lake cruise aboard the Hakone Sightseeing Cruise
The sightseeing boats known as the "Hakone Sightseeing Cruise" connect the three ports of Togendai, Hakone-machi, and Moto-Hakone, offering a leisurely cruise with views of Mount Fuji and the Hakone mountains from the water. The ships, designed to resemble sailing vessels, are also popular as a photogenic subject.
Historic spots scattered along the lakeshore
The lakeshore is dotted with historic spots, including Hakone Shrine's "Peace Torii" rising from the water, the cedar avenue of the old Tokaido road that once shielded Edo-period travelers from the sun, and the reconstructed site of the Hakone Checkpoint.
