Hakone Open-Air Museum

Opened in 1969 as Japan's first open-air museum. Set on expansive grounds surrounded by Hakone's nature, it displays about 120 outdoor sculptures by Japanese and international artists including Henry Moore and Rodin. Highlights include the "Picasso Pavilion," gathering the painter's paintings and ceramic works, the stained-glass tower "Symphonic Sculpture," and a foot bath where visitors can soak their feet while admiring the art — a unique viewing experience blending art and nature. It's a two-minute walk from Chokoku-no-Mori Station on the Hakone Tozan Railway, making access easy.

The Picasso Pavilion and symbolic tower
Highlights of the museum include the "Picasso Pavilion," housing about 300 paintings, sculptures, and ceramic works by Pablo Picasso, and the 18-meter-tall stained-glass tower "Symphonic Sculpture that Calls for Happiness." The spiral staircase inside the tower also offers views of the Hakone scenery.
Art appreciation while soaking your feet
The outdoor exhibition area includes a free foot bath, offering the distinctly Hakone experience of viewing sculptures while soaking your feet in hot-spring water. There are also many play-equipment works for children, making it popular with families.
