Senjogahara Marshland
戦場ヶ原
A high-altitude marshland spreading across roughly 400 hectares at an elevation of about 1,400 meters, registered as a Ramsar wetland site. Wooden boardwalks are maintained across the marsh, letting visitors enjoy seasonal flora and views of Mount Nantai while hiking.
One of Japan's largest high moors
Formed when a lake was gradually filled in with sediment and plant matter, Senjogahara is one of Japan's leading high-altitude moors and is registered under the Ramsar Convention as a wetland of international importance. Wooden boardwalks are laid across the marsh, allowing visitors to walk through it without damaging the delicate ecosystem.
The legend of Mount Nantai and Mount Akagi
The name "Senjogahara" ("Field of a Thousand Battles") comes from a legend that the gods of Mount Nantai and Mount Akagi, in the form of a giant snake and a giant centipede, once fought over the waters of Lake Chuzenji here. Even today, the marshland is regarded as a place where nature's grandeur and Japanese myth intersect.
Seasonal flora and hiking courses
The marsh is home to a diverse array of alpine plants that bloom in succession through the seasons, including cotton grass and lilies. Well-maintained hiking courses of varying lengths connect to Yudaki Falls and Lake Yunoko, making it popular among hikers of all experience levels.

🌸 Spring (Mar-May)
The marsh turns a fresh green, and early-blooming flowers such as skunk cabbage can be seen.
🌿 Summer (Jun-Aug)
Cotton grass and various alpine flowers bloom one after another, and it's a comfortable season for hiking in the cool highland air.
🍁 Autumn (Sep-Nov)
The marsh grass turns a golden brown, offering a magnificent view together with the surrounding mountains' autumn colors.
❄️ Winter (Dec-Feb)
The marsh is blanketed in snow, and snowshoe trekking tours are also available.
