Akechidaira Observatory & Ropeway

明智平展望台(ロープウェイ)

A ropeway station partway up the Iroha-zaka slope, from whose summit observatory visitors can take in Lake Chuzenji, Kegon Falls, and Mount Nantai all at once — one of Oku-Nikko's finest scenic spots. The name is said to derive from a legend that the high priest Tenkai was secretly the warlord Akechi Mitsuhide.

A full view of Lake Chuzenji and Kegon Falls

Riding the ropeway up to the Akechidaira Observatory at the summit reveals a single sweeping view encompassing the surface of Lake Chuzenji below, Kegon Falls cascading from it, and the grand Mount Nantai. During the autumn-leaf season especially, the surrounding slopes turn a breathtaking red and yellow.

The legend of the high priest Tenkai and Akechi Mitsuhide

The name "Akechidaira" is said to have been given by the early-Edo-period Tendai priest Tenkai, who developed Mt. Nikko, when he visited this spot — and is also tied to a legend that Tenkai was in fact the later identity of Akechi Mitsuhide, who staged the Honno-ji Incident. The truth is uncertain, but it's passed down as one of Nikko's many legends.

A rest stop on the Iroha-zaka drive

Located partway up Iroha-zaka, this is a convenient stop to combine with sightseeing at Lake Chuzenji and Kegon Falls. Around the ropeway station are shops and a light-meal counter, also used as a rest stop during a drive.
