Shugenji Temple

収玄寺

A small Nichiren-sect temple standing right beside the road on the way from Hase Station to Hasedera Temple. Built on the former residence of the Kamakura warrior Shijo Kingo, it's a "temple of flowers" where many passersby pause to admire the blooms — an easy stop along a Hase-area walk.

The former residence of Shijo Kingo

Shugenji is a Nichiren-sect temple built on the former residence of Shijo Kingo, a Kamakura warrior known as one of Nichiren's most loyal disciples. The grounds feature a striking stone monument inscribed "Site of Shijo Kingo's Residence," said to be written in the hand of Togo Heihachiro, the hero of the Russo-Japanese War.

A small temple of flowers along the way to Hasedera

Located right along the approach from Enoden's Hase Station to Hasedera Temple, just to the left of the sidewalk, it naturally catches the eye of tourists heading to Hasedera and the Great Buddha. Seasonal flowers planted on the grounds have earned it the affectionate nickname "small temple of flowers."

A brief rest stop while exploring Hase

Amid the Hase area's cluster of attractions — Hasedera Temple, Kotoku-in, Amanawa Shinmei Shrine — this small but historically significant temple, tied to the samurai class, is worth a quick visit. Since a visit takes only a few minutes, it's an easy addition to any walk through the area.
