Kencho-ji Temple
建長寺
Founded in 1253, Kencho-ji is Japan's oldest Zen training monastery. Ranking first among the Five Mountains of Kamakura, it was built by Hojo Tokiyori, who invited the priest Lanxi Daolong from Song-dynasty China as founding abbot. The grounds feature an awe-inspiring Zen temple layout with the Sammon gate, Buddha hall, Dharma hall, and Chinese-style gate aligned in a single row. It's also a popular starting point for hiking, with a mountain trail toward Tengen beginning at the rear of the grounds.
Highlights
The straight north-south layout running through the center of the grounds is a classic example of Zen Buddhist temple architecture. The Important Cultural Property bell was cast in 1255 during the Kamakura period and still tolls the hours from the bell tower at the rear of the grounds. The large juniper tree in front of the Buddha hall is said to have grown from a seed Lanxi Daolong brought from Song China, and carries the dignity of over 750 years of age.
The Tengen hiking course
The Tengen hiking course begins at "Hansobo," at the very back of the grounds. Walking the ridge trail known as the "Kamakura Alps," hikers pass scenic viewpoints overlooking Kamakura and Sagami Bay. A route also continues on to Zuisenji Temple and Meigetsuin Valley, making this a popular course for taking in Kamakura's nature.
History
Founded in 1253 when Hojo Tokiyori invited the Song Zen priest Lanxi Daolong. The site, once called "Jigokugani" (Hell Valley), was developed into a proper center for Zen practice. It has maintained its rank as first among the Five Mountains of Kamakura ever since, and today remains the head temple of the Kenchoji school of Rinzai Zen, with affiliated temples across Japan.
Seasonal Highlights
🌸 Spring (Mar-May)
Cherry and flowering peach blossoms on the grounds peak in March and April. The solemn "Kencho-ji Founder's Memorial" service takes place in mid-April.
