Komyo-ji Temple
光明寺
A large Jodo-sect temple near Zaimokuza Beach. Its towering Sammon gate, one of the largest in Kamakura, is truly impressive, and the temple is also known as a "temple of lotuses." The "O-juya" festival held in August is one of Kamakura's three major events, drawing visitors from across Japan. The view from its hilltop overlooking the sea is also spectacular.
The great Sammon gate
Built in 1698, the Sammon gate stands about 20 meters tall, the largest temple gate in Kamakura. Its imposing presence overwhelms visitors, and photos taken with this gate as a backdrop have become a classic image of Kamakura's temples.
Lotus highlights
The pond on the grounds bursts into lotus bloom in July and August. Since the flowers open in the morning and close in the afternoon, an early visit is the best chance to see them at their finest. Known as a lotus-viewing spot in the Kanto region, many visitors come specifically to see the blooms.
O-juya and history
Founded in 1253 under the patronage of Hojo Tsunetoki, this temple serves as something of a Kanto regional head temple for the Jodo sect. The "O-juya" (Ten Nights) service held in October is one of Kamakura's signature autumn events, celebrated grandly with a procession of chanting worshippers.

Spring, when the cherry blossoms bloom on the grounds, draws many visitors; the combination of the Sammon gate and cherry blossoms is beautiful.
🌿 Summer (Jun-Aug)
July and August bring lotus flowers to the pond; the early-morning lotus blooms paired with the temple's sacred atmosphere are wonderful.
🍁 Autumn (Sep-Nov)
October's O-juya is the busiest season on the grounds; autumn foliage can also be enjoyed.
❄️ Winter (Dec-Feb)
The quiet winter grounds make for a hidden-gem stroll, with views out toward the sea.
