Kamakura Museum of Literature

A literature museum housed in a Western-style mansion once used as the villa of the Maeda marquis family. It displays materials related to writers with deep ties to Kamakura, including Yasunari Kawabata, Ryunosuke Akutagawa, and Ton Satomi. The rose garden is famous, with about 250 varieties and 2,500 rose bushes blooming in spring and autumn.
The Maeda marquis family villa
Built in the late Meiji era as the Spanish-style villa of the Maeda marquis family, descendants of the powerful Kaga clan. After the war it passed through the hands of several notable figures before Kamakura City acquired it in 1985 and opened it as a literature museum. The elegant interior still conveys the atmosphere of the era.
The rose garden
The museum's garden is planted with about 250 varieties and 2,500 rose bushes, reaching peak bloom in spring (May-June) and autumn (October-November). The spring roses in particular bloom in a riot of color and are extremely popular as a photo spot.
Ties to Kamakura's literary tradition
The museum displays original manuscripts, letters, and photographs of writers connected to Kamakura, including Yasunari Kawabata, Junichiro Tanizaki, Ton Satomi, and Jiro Osaragi. Its rich permanent exhibition introduces the works and lives of the writers known as the "Kamakura Bunshi" (Kamakura literati).
