Gokurakuji Temple
極楽寺
Founded in 1259 when Hojo Shigetoki invited the priest Ninsho, this Risshu-sect temple sits right beside Gokurakuji Station on the Enoshima Electric Railway. Its small thatched-roof main gate is a picturesque, much-photographed spot that has also appeared as a filming location in movies and dramas. Once a large temple complex, today only the main hall and treasure house remain amid quiet grounds. As a pioneer of social welfare initiatives (hospitals, care homes, and more) led by Ninsho, the temple also holds an important place in the history of welfare work.
The thatched-roof main gate
The thatched-roof main gate is arguably the face of Gokurakuji, and one of Kamakura's most picturesque scenes. Framing the gate against the greenery of the slope above is a favorite composition among photography enthusiasts, especially beautiful during fresh spring greenery or autumn foliage, when many photographers visit.
Ninsho's social welfare work
The temple's founder, the priest Ninsho, carried out remarkably progressive social welfare work for his time. He established facilities on the grounds equivalent to hospitals, care homes for the elderly, and support for people with disabilities — with as many as 57 such facilities said to have existed within Gokurakuji's precincts. This pioneering charitable work is recognized as a forerunner of later welfare initiatives, and Ninsho is honored as the "monk of welfare."
The Enoden line and Gokurakuji Station
Gokurakuji Station is one of the most charming stops on the Enoden line, a small wooden station building frequently used as a filming location for movies and dramas. Step off the platform and the temple's main gate appears right before you — a striking contrast that captivates visitors. The surrounding sloped streets carry a quintessentially Kamakura atmosphere, and the area pairs well with a walk through Hase and Inamuragasaki.

April is especially recommended, when cherry blossoms and fresh greenery frame the main gate beautifully — an excellent season for photography.

Quiet grounds surrounded by deep greenery. Visit in the cool morning hours on a route combining the Enoden line and the sea.
🍁 Autumn (Sep-Nov)
November is best, when the trees around the main gate turn to autumn colors — a especially beautiful pairing with the thatched roof.
❄️ Winter (Dec-Feb)
Fewer tourists allow for a leisurely, quiet walk through the grounds. Enjoying the winter sea and Gokurakuji's scenery from the Enoden car window is also worthwhile.
