Enoshima Island
江ノ島
A small island roughly 4 km in circumference floating in Sagami Bay, Enoshima is a classic addition to any Kamakura sightseeing trip. Highlights are packed into a compact area, including Enoshima Shrine, the Iwaya Caves, and the Sea Candle observation tower. Accessible by the Enoshima Electric Railway or the Odakyu Line, it's best explored over half a day to a full day.
Enoshima Shrine and the Three Sisters
The entire island is considered sacred, and the three shrines that make up Enoshima Shrine — Hetsunomiya, Nakatsunomiya, and Okutsunomiya — enshrine the three sister goddesses of Benzaiten. They are said to bring blessings for romantic connections, the performing arts, and music, drawing many visitors hoping for good relationships. In 2022, there were even moves to seek a place on the World Heritage tentative list.
The Sea Candle observation tower
From the Enoshima Sea Candle lighthouse-observatory near the island's center, clear days offer a stunning 360-degree view of Mount Fuji, Sagami Bay, the Miura Peninsula, and the Izu Peninsula. The view at sunset is especially spectacular and popular with couples and photography enthusiasts.
The Iwaya Caves
The Iwaya Caves on the island's south side are natural caverns (about 152 m) carved by the waves. Known as a site of worship since the Edo period, legend holds that the monk Kukai once trained here. Exploring the caves by handheld candlelight offers a magical experience.

🌸 Spring (Mar-May)
A season with fewer crowds, making sightseeing easier. Good to combine with cherry-blossom viewing.
🌿 Summer (Jun-Aug)
Crowded with beachgoers, but also popular for its sunsets and the Enoshima fireworks festival, a summer tradition.
🍁 Autumn (Sep-Nov)
October is relatively uncrowded and pleasant for sightseeing. There are no autumn leaves, but the clear autumn air makes for a spectacular view from the observation tower.
❄️ Winter (Dec-Feb)
The "Shonan no Hoseki" illumination event takes place, giving winter Enoshima a magical atmosphere, with beautiful views combining Mount Fuji and the sunset.

- Summer weekends and holidays are extremely crowded, with long waits to even reach the island. A weekday, spring, or autumn visit is recommended.
