Since opening in 1968, it has rotated 4 of the 11 floats owned by Sakurayama Hachimangu on display every 4 months, so visitors encounter different floats depending on when they visit. Visitors can closely admire floats embodying the refined skills of Hida's master carpenters, including gold leaf, carvings, and mechanical dolls, while the adjoining Sakurayama Nikko-kan also displays an elaborate model of Nikko Toshogu Shrine. The Takayama Festival, including its float traditions, is registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, making this a popular spot to experience the power and beauty of the Takayama Festival outside of festival season.
Year-round display of actual festival floats
This facility permanently displays 4 of the 11 floats that actually parade through the castle town during the autumn Takayama Festival (Sakurayama Hachimangu's annual festival). Since the displayed floats are rotated roughly every 4 months, visitors encounter different floats depending on the season of their visit. The floats, crafted by Hida's master carpenters competing in skill from the Edo to Meiji periods, can be admired up close, with their intricate carvings, metal fittings, and gorgeous curtains.
National Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property, UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage
The displayed floats are designated national Important Tangible Folk Cultural Properties, and the "Takayama Festival," including its float traditions, is both a national Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property and was registered in 2016 as a component of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage "Yama, Hoko, Yatai, Float Festivals." The chance to closely appreciate, year-round, the gorgeous floats normally seen only during the actual festival is a major appeal.
The adjoining Sakurayama Nikko-kan
The adjoining facility, accessible with a combined ticket, the "Sakurayama Nikko-kan," displays an elaborate model of Nikko Toshogu Shrine crafted by Hida's master carpenters over 10 years. Structures including the Yomeimon Gate are precisely reproduced at 1/10 scale, letting visitors fully savor the pinnacle of Hida craftsmanship alongside the Floats Exhibition Hall.
