An observation deck on a hilltop overlooking the Ogimachi village of Shirakawa-go, developed on the ruins of Ogimachi Castle, built during the Sengoku period. Below spreads a rural landscape dotted with gassho-zukuri houses, with the Hakusan mountain range towering beyond — a classic photo spot commonly used in guidebooks and posters introducing Shirakawa-go. The snow-covered winter scenery and the night view of the illuminated village after sunset especially attract many photography enthusiasts. It can be reached by climbing a roughly 15-20 minute walking trail from the village center, or by shuttle bus, and shops are set up around the observation deck.
A Sengoku-era mountain castle ruin turned scenic observation deck
Ogimachi Castle is a mountain castle said to have been built by the Uchigashima clan during the Sengoku period; today, an observation deck stands alongside a building modeled on a castle keep (Shiroyama Tenshukaku, with dining and shop facilities). Overlooking the entire village, it has become a beloved classic photo spot symbolizing Shirakawa-go for tourists from Japan and abroad.

From the observation deck, visitors can take in over 100 gassho-zukuri houses dotting the Ogimachi village, the surrounding paddies and fields, and the Hakusan mountain range beyond. The scenery changes expression with each season, and the snow-dusted winter village and the gassho-zukuri houses reflected in the water mirror right after rice planting draw many photographers.
Two ways to reach it: on foot or by shuttle bus
From the village center, the observation deck can be reached via a gently sloping walking trail (about 15-20 minutes on foot) or a shuttle bus departing from near the Wada House (¥300 one-way, running every 20 minutes from 9:00-16:10, may be suspended due to weather). Even the walking route involves no steep stairs, making for an easy, stroll-like climb.
