A district that grew alongside the port's opening
The area's origins trace back to 1859, when the opening of the Port of Yokohama brought many Chinese residents to the foreign settlement. Today it is home to renowned restaurants specializing in Cantonese, Beijing, Shanghai, and Sichuan cuisine, and is known as one of Japan's three great Chinatowns, alongside those in Tokyo and Kobe.
Street food and the ten Chinatown gates
Street food such as xiaolongbao, steamed buns, and sesame balls are popular, and the main street lined with take-out shops is especially lively. The ten Chinatown gates (such as Zenrin-mon and Choyo-mon) placed around the district are also worth seeing, arranged according to feng shui principles.
