Its origins lie in shops that gathered to sell daily necessities to residents of the foreign settlement in Yamate after the Port of Yokohama opened. Today it remains lined with many high-quality specialty shops, including Western clothing stores, imported goods shops, and Western confectionery shops.
The birthplace of Hamatora culture
In the 1970s, a fashion style known as "Hamatora" (Yokohama Traditional) spread from Motomachi, and the street still retains its refined and sophisticated atmosphere today. It is conveniently located within walking distance of Chinatown and Yamashita Park.
