Kamakura's premier full-scale hiking course, following a ridge often called the "Kamakura Alps." You can enter from either the Zuisenji or Kencho-ji side, and Tengen (Rokkoku Pass) offers sweeping views over central Kamakura and even the Izu Peninsula.
A ridge walk known as the Kamakura Alps
The Tengen hiking course runs about 5.5 km over the hills in northeastern Kamakura, taking roughly 2 hours, and is affectionately known as the "Kamakura Alps." It can be accessed from two directions: via the side gate of Zuisenji Temple, or from Hansobo at the rear of Kencho-ji.
The view from Tengen (Rokkoku Pass)
After a steep, rocky climb, you reach Tengen (Rokkoku Pass), which offers views over central Kamakura and, on clear days, all the way to the Izu Peninsula. Continuing on brings you to Ohirayama, at 159 meters the highest point in Kamakura City.
The descent route to Kencho-ji and Kakuon-ji
From Ohirayama, a gentle descent leads to a fork toward Kencho-ji and Kakuon-ji, passing Juoiwa rock on the way down to Hansobo at Kencho-ji. Note that entering via Kencho-ji requires paying the temple's admission fee.
