Nagoe Kiridoshi

名越切通し

One of the "Seven Entrances of Kamakura" connecting Kamakura with the Miura Peninsula (Zushi), and a nationally designated historic site. Developed as a key route in the early 13th century, this old path is dotted with highlights such as the Mandala-do yagura tomb cluster and the Ogiri-giwa cliff, popular with history buffs and hikers alike.

A key route linking Kamakura and Miura

Nagoe Kiridoshi is one of the "Seven Entrances of Kamakura" connecting Kamakura with the Zushi and Miura Peninsula area, developed in the early 13th century during the Kamakura period. It is thought to have also served as a defensive point for Kamakura and is designated a national historic site.

The Mandala-do yagura tomb cluster

Along the pass is the "Mandala-do Yagura Cluster," a gathering of over 150 "yagura" — cave tombs believed to date from the medieval period — viewable only during special opening periods. The countless yagura carved into the steep cliff are a valuable relic conveying Kamakura-period funerary customs.

The Ogiri-giwa cliff and historical walking

The massive man-made cliff known as "Ogiri-giwa" is another highlight; once thought to be a defensive structure, it is now more commonly believed to be the remains of a stone quarry. The path is unpaved, so wear comfortable walking shoes.
