Myohonji Temple
妙本寺
A large Nichiren-sect temple in the Hikigayatsu valley, a 10-minute walk from Kamakura Station. Built on the former residence of the Hiki clan, the temple is notable for its long approach and imposing Nitenmon gate. The spacious grounds offer a relaxed atmosphere for a walk, making this a hidden gem.
The Hiki clan's family temple
Hiki Yoshikazu was a trusted vassal of Minamoto no Yoritomo, but was destroyed by Hojo Tokimasa in the Hiki Rebellion of 1203. Afterward, Nichiro — a disciple of Nichiren connected to the Hiki family — is said to have founded the temple around 1260 to console the souls of the clan.
The Nitenmon gate and approach
The long approach from the main gate carries the atmosphere befitting one of Kamakura's venerable old temples. The Nitenmon gate, believed to have been built in 1335 and designated a city cultural property, is one of the oldest gate structures in Kamakura, enshrining the guardian figures Jikokuten and Tamonten from among the Four Heavenly Kings.
Quiet grounds
With relatively few tourists, the grounds offer a calm space to spend time. Rows of gravestones on the grounds convey a sense of historical weight. An early-morning visit is especially recommended.
