Kamakura-gu Shrine
鎌倉宮
Founded by imperial decree of the Meiji Emperor, this shrine enshrines Prince Moriyoshi, son of Emperor Go-Daigo. Revered by loyalist activists at the end of the Edo period, the shrine still preserves the earthen dungeon where Prince Moriyoshi was imprisoned. It's known for blessings related to victory and warding off misfortune.
Prince Moriyoshi and the earthen dungeon
Prince Moriyoshi, son of Emperor Go-Daigo, was a hero who contributed greatly to the overthrow of the Kamakura shogunate. However, after losing a political struggle against Ashikaga Takauji, he was imprisoned in an earthen dungeon on this site for about nine months from 1334, and beheaded the following year at age 28. The actual dungeon remains on the grounds and can be viewed for a fee.
The Yakuwari-ishi (misfortune-breaking stone)
The grounds have a "Yakuwari-ishi," where visitors can experience an unusual ritual: smashing an unglazed clay cup against the stone to break away misfortune (cups cost ¥200). Many say it leaves them feeling refreshingly free of bad luck.
Pairing with Egara Tenjin Shrine
Egara Tenjin Shrine is a 5-minute walk from Kamakura-gu. Dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the god of learning, it draws many visitors during exam season.

🌸 Spring (Mar-May)
The cherry blossoms on the grounds peak in March and April, beautifully set off against the vermilion-lacquered shrine buildings amid fresh green.
🌿 Summer (Jun-Aug)
The Nagoshi-no-Oharae purification ritual (June 30) at Kamakura-gu includes passing through a grass ring.
🍁 Autumn (Sep-Nov)
Also known as a foliage spot, November offers a beautifully colorful setting for a visit.
❄️ Winter (Dec-Feb)
Busy with New Year's visitors and those praying for protection from misfortune. The crisp winter air makes for a refreshing visit.
