Kakuon-ji Temple
覚園寺
An old Shingon-sect temple tucked in the Nikaido valley (yato). Unusually, photography is prohibited on the grounds, and visits are only possible as part of a guided tour. Known as a temple "where time seems to have stopped" in the Kamakura period, it's immensely popular with history enthusiasts.
Guided tours only
Visits to Kakuon-ji are basically conducted as guided tours led by a monk at set times (10:00, 12:00, 13:00, 14:00, and 15:00). Photography is completely prohibited on the grounds — visitors are only permitted to take in the sights with their own eyes. This strict policy only heightens the mysterious atmosphere.
The Yakushi Triad
The principal images, a Yakushi triad along with statues of Nikko and Gakko Bosatsu, date from the Kamakura period and are designated a national Important Cultural Property. Together with an old earthen storehouse housing a statue of Dainichi Nyorai, they convey the high artistic level of Kamakura-period craftsmanship.
The Sacred Fox Mound and fox legend
The grounds include a Sacred Fox Mound tied to a legend of a white fox. According to the story, when Hojo Sadatoki prayed to the Yakushi Nyorai, a white fox appeared and his illness was cured — and ever since, foxes have been regarded as protective guardians here.

🌸 Spring (Mar-May)
The spring grounds, wrapped in the valley's greenery, are quiet and beautiful. Flowers bloom here slightly later than in central Kamakura.
🌿 Summer (Jun-Aug)
Surrounded by a green valley, the grounds stay cool even in summer, with only the sound of cicadas breaking the stillness.
🍁 Autumn (Sep-Nov)
The trees on the grounds turn beautiful colors during the foliage season, best in mid-November.
❄️ Winter (Dec-Feb)
When it snows, the atmosphere becomes especially magical. With fewer visitors, you can take a leisurely tour.
