Hokokuji Temple (Bamboo Temple)
報国寺（竹の寺）
Known as the "Bamboo Temple" for its grove of about 2,000 moso bamboo stalks, this Rinzai-sect temple has a teahouse, Kyukoan, tucked at the far end of the grove where visitors can sip matcha in a tranquil setting. One of Kamakura's most photogenic spots, it never fails to impress.
The bamboo grove
The grove of roughly 2,000 moso bamboo stalks on the grounds reaches nearly 20 meters in height, and the light filtering through the bamboo creates a uniquely still, cool atmosphere. The grove is open for viewing from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (last entry 3:30 p.m.).
The Kyukoan teahouse
Tucked in a corner of the bamboo grove, the Kyukoan teahouse serves matcha and Japanese sweets (¥500) while you take in the surrounding bamboo. Enjoying a bowl of tea in this green-wrapped space is a special experience, especially memorable on an early-morning visit.
History
The temple is said to have been founded in 1334 by Ashikaga Ietoki, grandfather of Ashikaga Takauji, with Tengan Eko as its founding priest. The grounds still contain a cluster of five-tiered stone stupas belonging to the Ashikaga and Uesugi families, conveying a sense of historical weight.

The fresh greenery of spring makes the bamboo grove even more vivid and refreshing. Early morning, when the soft spring light filters through the bamboo, is especially recommended.
🌿 Summer (Jun-Aug)
Wrapped in a green tunnel, the bamboo grove stays cool even in summer and is popular as a retreat from the heat. Visiting in the morning means fewer crowds and a more comfortable visit.
🍁 Autumn (Sep-Nov)
Bamboo stays evergreen, so there's no fall color here, but the surrounding trees turn color, creating a beautiful contrast of red and green.
❄️ Winter (Dec-Feb)
In the clear winter air, the stillness of the bamboo grove feels even deeper. With fewer visitors, it's the best season for relaxed photography.
