A Jodo-sect temple said to be connected to Hojo Masako, and one of Kamakura's finest spots for azaleas. About 100 azalea bushes grow on the grounds, including a large specimen nicknamed "Obake Tsutsuji" (the "Ghost Azalea").
A temple linked to Hojo Masako
Anyoin is a Jodo-sect temple said to have been built to pray for the soul of Hojo Masako, wife of Minamoto no Yoritomo. As a historical site associated with Masako, it is often featured on walking routes through Kamakura's history.
"Obake Tsutsuji" and Kamakura's finest azaleas
About 100 reddish-purple azalea bushes grow on the grounds, and the largest, oldest bush is affectionately known as "Obake Tsutsuji" (Ghost Azalea). It typically reaches full bloom from late April to early May, drawing many visitors as one of Kamakura's premier azalea spots.
A quiet old temple in the Omachi area
Located in the Omachi area alongside other temples associated with the Nichiren and Ji sects, such as Ankokuronji and Kyoonji, Anyoin can be visited in relative quiet outside of azalea season.
