Hirayu Onsen is said to be one of the oldest hot springs in the Hida region, with a legend that Takeda Shingen's troops, marching toward Matsumoto during the Sengoku period, were led by a white monkey to discover the spring and heal their wounds — hence the nickname "Shingen's Hidden Bath."
